Meek?

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.-Matthew 5:5 NIV

Meek. Now that is a word that is not used often.  It brings to my mind someone who is weak and mousy.  Is that who will inherit the earth? Wait, doesn't Jesus refer to Himself as meek when He tells us to take His yoke upon us?  Surely Jesus is not weak!  He is the mighty Son of God. That makes me wonder, what does meek mean?

Going to the dictionary, I find that meek alternatively means "showing patience and humility; gentle." Ah, that sounds more like my Savior! How incredible that our King would relate to us in this way. Yet, are these the characteristics that we normally associate with those  who would inherit the earth?  By the world's standards, those who inherit should be the powerful, the aggressive, those who push their way ahead.  But God's standard is so different.  Our power and strength come from Him, but He wants to flow through us in patience, humility and gentleness--meekness. The meek shall inherit the earth. What an amazing God we serve!

Prayer:  Father, help us to grow in Christ-like meekness, glorifying You. AMEN.
